Common Genital Warts Treatments Available at Dr Ben Medical

Topical Creams

Topical creams contain active immune enhancers that stimulate the production of substances such as interferon and other cytokines.

It is recommended to apply the cream at night and wash it off in the morning as it is not meant to be kept on the skin.

Resin Application

Resin application is a topical medical solution that our doctors will use for genital warts removal. The solution works by inducing necrosis, which kills the wart without causing any pain or discomfort. The wart should naturally fall off within 3-4 days after application.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy involves freezing the wart using extremely low temperatures, typically by using liquid nitrogen. The patient may experience pain or discomfort during the procedure.

The wart should fall off within a few days, or in some cases, the wart may shrink in size which may indicate a repeat treatment is necessary.

Electrocautery

Electrocautery is a treatment that involves burning off the wart, resulting in immediate genital warts removal.

The process begins with the application of a local anaesthetic to the affected area to reduce any pain or discomfort during the procedure.

What is Human papillomavirus (HPV) Infection?

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a prevalent virus that can affect various parts of the body in both men and women. HPV can cause warts on hands, feet, face, and genital areas among others.

Low-risk HPV strains are usually mild while high-risk HPV strains require immediate attention as they can result in cancer or cell mutations.

Who is susceptible to HPV?

Anyone, regardless of age, sex or race, can contract HPV through sexual contact or close skin-to-skin genital contact with an infected partner.

Women are at a higher risk of developing complications from HPV as high-risk strains can progress to cervical cancer if left untreated. Pap smears/cervical cancer screening is recommended for women aged 30 and above.

In men, HPV commonly causes genital warts but poses relatively fewer health risks compared to women.

Most HPV infections tend to clear on their own but in severe cases, it may lead to cancers of the penis, neck and head, and anus.

What are the symptoms of HPV Infection?

Normally this group of viruses does not produce symptoms and most people are unaware that they are infected.

However, within 1-3 months of the initial infection, you may notice a small cluster of small or large fleshy bumps in the skin or mucous membranes of the genital area.

FAQs

The HPV that is responsible for the warts is transmitted through genital fluid transfer and genital skin contact.

You don’t need to have penetrative sexual intercourse to become infected. Condoms and other barrier methods only offer limited protection against infection.

On rare occasions, there can be transmission during childbirth.

Unfortunately, there is no test available in Singapore that has the capability to test for HPV strains that cause the occurrence of genital warts.

Unfortunately, genital warts will occur after successful treatment for many patients. As such repeat treatments may be necessary.

The Gardasil 9 vaccine is available for men. It helps prevent genital warts, anal and penile cancers that are caused by certain strains of HPV. You will be required to take the vaccination in 3 doses.
