Regular Screenings for Peace of Mind

The early detection of cancerous changes and cells in the body allows for timely treatment which places one at a better chance of survival.

Breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer among women in Singapore. Each year, over 2,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer, and over 400 die from the disease.  In Singapore, cervical cancer is the 9th most prevalent cancer affecting women in Singapore.

Mammogram or Ultrasound (Breast Cancer Screening)

Breast Cancer Screening refers to the process of examining a woman’s breasts for cancer, using ultrasound or mammography technology to create a mammogram X-ray of the breast tissues, before any signs or symptoms of the disease are present.

Mammogram: A low-dose X-ray of the breast tissue is used to detect any abnormalities or changes in the breast tissue.

Ultrasound: A scan that uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of the breast tissue, and can help distinguish between solid and fluid-filled lumps.

Recommendation for types of screening and time intervals

  • For Women aged 50 years old and above – Mammogram screening
    every two years
  • For Women aged between 40-49 years old – Mammogram screening
    one time a year
  • For Women below the age of 40 – Ultrasound screening

Cervical Cancer Screening

Cervical Cancer Screening refers to the process of testing women for early signs of cancerous changes or abnormal cells in the cervix using various methods such as Pap Smear, HPV test or visual inspection, even in the absence of any symptoms.

Pap Smear involves collecting samples of cells from your cervix — the lower, narrow end of your uterus using a small brush or spatula. The sample is then observed under a microscope for abnormality.

An HPV test is a cervical swab test to screen for high-risk HPV strains.

HPV test can be done:

  • As a co-test together with pap smear cytology
  • As a reflex test where HPV test is added on following an abnormal pap smear cytology
  • As a sole primary HPV screening test
  • HPV genotyping

HPV test stands for Human Papillomavirus test, which is a screening test used to detect the presence of HPV, a virus that can cause abnormal cell changes and lead to cervical cancer.

Vaginal Yeast or Yeast Infection

What are the common causes of a vaginal yeast infection?

  • Bacterial infection
  • Fungal infection
  • Sexually transmitted infections

Symptoms of vaginal infections or yeast infections include:

Vaginal Lumps & Bumps

Lumps and bumps in the vulva and vagina can be categorised into different types, including those that are benign, those caused by infections, those related to skin conditions, and those that are indicative of cancer.

Some common lumps and bumps may include:

  • Genital warts
  • Molluscum Contagiosum
  • Folliculitis
  • Cysts

Menstrual Health

There are women who experience irregular or very few menstrual cycles. While some may not feel concerned about not having their period, if a woman misses three periods in a row (either consecutively or within a year), it is advisable to schedule a visit with a doctor.

Some common menstrual health issues include:

  • Infrequent/Irregular menses
  • Bleeding between menses
  • Heavy flow
  • Bleeding after sexual intercourse

Protect Yourself with HPV Vaccination

The HPV vaccination can help to protect against specific types of HPV infection that may lead to cervical cancer. The benefits of HPV vaccination are enhanced when given before one starts any sexual activity.

There are two main HPV vaccines available in Singapore that are suitable for different age groups and offer different protection against specific HPV strains.

FAQs

If you notice unusual vaginal discharge symptoms as above, you should consult our doctors for a checkup. Depending on your risk of exposure, our doctors may advise STD vaginal swab tests to rule out related infections.

Vaginal swab tests are slightly uncomfortable but well-tolerated among patients. You are encouraged to let your doctor know if you have a low threshold for pain.

While breast self-examination can be a useful way to detect any changes, it is not a reliable method for detecting breast cancer on its own. It is important to consult medical professionals about the recommended breast cancer screening options based on individual risk factors and medical history.

Clinical trials have shown that the vaccine is up to 99% effective in preventing infection when administered before exposure to the virus. The vaccine is most effective when given before sexual activity begins.

In addition to its high efficacy, the HPV vaccine is safe and well-tolerated, with few side effects reported.

Research has demonstrated that HPV testing has a higher rate of detecting cervical cancer, with 76.7% of cases showing positive results prior to diagnosis, compared to just 59.1% for Pap smear cytology samples. These findings indicate the superior sensitivity of HPV testing in identifying cervical cancer. Notably, the research also revealed that only a small percentage of precancerous changes (3.5%) and cervical cancer cases (5.9%) were negative for HPV testing, but positive for Pap smear cytology.

As a result of these findings, healthcare policies in various countries have shifted towards incorporating HPV testing in cervical cancer screening strategies, given its greater accuracy in detecting the presence of the disease.

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is the primary cause of cervical cancer in women, with over 150 strains of the virus identified. While most HPV strains are benign, there are high-risk strains that increase the likelihood of developing cervical cancer. However, not all women infected with high-risk HPV will develop cervical cancer, as the infection can resolve spontaneously over time in some cases, while others may not. The virus is transmitted through close skin-to-skin contact, usually during sexual activity, and infected individuals are often asymptomatic.
